Coco Belfrage Sponsors Dan Wekoya and Moses Nassan to High School.
In early March 2013, Mr. Coco Belfrage and his wife were in the middle of a visit to Stara for Kitchen and dinnig hall inagruration when One of the directors, Josephine shared a request about students who could not afford to join secondary school due to finances issues.Mr.Coco agreed to cheap in to sponor. Josephine Mumo immediately called Dan’s mom and asked her to send Dan to school so that he could meet a potential sponsor. Mr. Coco met Dan and asked him a few questions after which he decided that he would sponsor Dan’s high school education.
Dan was then admitted to Lang’ata High School although the first term had already been completed. He began studying in second term and it was challenging for him to catch up because he had joined extremely late. He performed poorly in second term and during the holiday, Director Josephine Mumo looked for teachers to coach him through the topics he had missed so that he would be at par with his classmates when he reported to school in third term.
The private coaching worked and he improved greatly, becoming the second best pupil in his class when he had been at the bottom of the class in the previous term. He went through high school smoothly afterwards and he sat for the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education in 2016 after which he scored a B- and earned himself an admission to Maseno University to study Bachelor Of Business Administration with IT.
Mr. Coco Belfrage continued to sponsor Dan’s education at Maseno University by providing him with school fees, accommodation expenses and upkeep. During university holidays, Dan would occasionally get involved with Stara in various activities; he brought some youth groups to the school to conduct mentorship sessions on several occasions, he was part of home visit teams which visited Stara households during the Covid-19 pandemic and he was at Stara for his industrial attachment towards the completion of his studies.
Dan graduates from Maseno University
20 years after Dan began his journey with Stara, he finally graduated on 25th February 2022 with a Bachelor of Business Administration with IT. The entire school administration is very happy that he has managed to come this far despite the challenges he faced earlier on in his education. It is our goal to be part of many life stories such as Dan’s by giving slum children from disadvantaged backgrounds a chance to use education as their way to better lives.
In a special way, we are grateful for the vital role that Mr. Coco Belfrage as well as his daughter Sarah played in Dan’s education, the family’s generousity has made it possible for a boy from a challenging background to achieve his childhood dream of being an accountant. We are even more grateful to him for extending the same kindness to other students who are still progressing with their education in high school and college. As he transitions to the career world and postgraduate education, we wish Dan the very best and we will always view him as an example the results that child protection, feeding and education can produce in children.
