- Early Childhood Education Program
Stara Rescue Centre and School admits children aged 3 to 8 years in the pre-school classes of playgroup, pp1 and pp2 where they are introduced to basic concepts such as classroom manners, the alphabet, and numbers. Pupils under this program also have a separate playing area which has special playing equipment that are designed for small children. The school’s early childhood education program also incorporates a special diet to cater for the nutritional and physical needs of the small children.
For instance, they are not served with hard foods because most of them do not have a fully developed set of teeth. The walls in the pre-school classes are animated with numbers, letters, domestic animals, and household items as a way of fostering observational learning by the learners.
Parents and guardians to children engaged in the early childhood education program have the closest relationship with the school staff as they are at school every morning and every evening to drop and pick the children. They are therefore updated constantly on the progress of the young children.
Stara Rescue Centre and School is open six days a week and regularly operates classes from Playgroup to Grade 9. All the classes adopt the national curriculum. We provide feeding, education, counseling, girl child and women empowerment to hundreds of children from Kibra slum and neighboring areas
In 2009 Swiss Stara Support, founded by the Cottier family in Switzerland, started supporting the school. They cater for the day to day running of the school, including payment of all staff salaries, breakfast, mid morning snack, and scholarships. Several infrastructural improvements are also made by them (toilets, urinals, dining room), including reconstruction of a whole classroom / office track following a fire due to electrical fault.
World Food Program (WFP) provided meals to kindergarten and free lunch during school days from 2004 to 2017, currently we depend on well-wishers for food.
