Stara Peace Women Organization originated from a trio of women residing in Kibera Slum, whose heartfelt commitment to providing nourishment, clothing, education, and guidance to orphaned children spurred them into action. Josephine Mumo, Farida Kamene, and Mariam Abdu, deeply affected by the predicament of homeless, neglected, and malnourished children, founded Stara Rescue Centre and School to offer them care, later expanding into Stara Peace Women to undertake broader community initiatives.

As noted by urban slum expert Mike Davis in “The Planet of Slums” (2006), Kibera accommodated an overwhelming populace of approximately 800,000 individuals, with a significant proportion living below the poverty threshold (under $2.15 per day). Instead of attending schools, numerous children roam the streets, vulnerable to exploitation in forms such as prostitution, early marriages, criminal activities, substance abuse, and sexual exploitation, primarily due to their families’ inability to afford school fees.
